How do I create Families and Relationships?

Describes how families are created in One Church Software and how to add extra Relationships between two people.

You will need the Limited Write People permission to perform this action.

In One Church Software, every person belongs to a family, and you can also record extra relationships (aunt, uncle, friend, coach, etc.) between people in different families. This article covers both.

Families

A new family is created automatically whenever you add a new person. That person becomes the Family Manager of their own family, and their initial Position (Adult, Child, etc.) is selected from the Family section of the Add Person dialog.

Add or edit family members

1. Open the person's profile.

2. Scroll to the Family section in the right-hand column and click the edit (pencil) icon next to the section heading. The Edit Family dialog opens.

3. To add a new family member, type a name into the Search to add a new family member field and pick from the results.

4. To indicate a romantic relationship between two members, click the heart icon between them.

5. To change a member's role, click the three-dot menu (⋯) next to their name. From there you can View profile, Set as family manager, or Remove from family.

6. Use the Family Position dropdown (Adult, Child, etc.) and the optional Family Tag field on each member to refine their role (see below).

7. Click Save.

Family Tag

A Family Tag is an optional label that qualifies a member's Family Position. For example, you might set the position to Child and the tag to granddaughter.

Relationships

You can add extra relationships between two people in the system (aunt, uncle, friend, coach, etc.) from the Relationships tab of a person's profile.

Each side of the relationship can have its own label — for example, one profile shows sister and the connected profile shows brother. A common set of relationship labels ships with One Church Software, and you can create new ones using the gear menu next to the dropdown.

Tip: A person can only belong to one primary family. Use Relationships to record connections between people in different families.
