What happens when a transaction is returned?

Describes how to handle returned transactions.

Updated this week

When processing online giving or payments through One Church Software, it’s important to understand how different types of transactions behave when issues arise, particularly ACH returns and credit card denials or chargebacks.

ACH Returns

When an ACH transaction is returned, this means the bank was unable to complete the transfer. Common reasons include insufficient funds, closed accounts, or incorrect account numbers.

  • If you're using Usio, our merchant services provider, as your processor, you’ll receive a notification directly from Usio when a return occurs.

  • The returned transaction will also be reflected in the status within One Church Software.

Credit Card Denials & Chargebacks

Credit cards don’t get “returned” in the same way ACH transactions do. Instead:

  • If the card is declined, it happens immediately during the transaction process (e.g., insufficient funds, expired card, etc.).

  • If there is a chargeback, it means the cardholder has disputed the charge with their bank. These are communicated separately and may take time to process.

Using Remote Check Scanning

If you're using Check Scanning, ACH returns are not currently communicated through direct notifications.

  • Instead, you’ll need to check the available report in your remote deposit dashboard to identify any returns.
