You will need the Check-In permission to change a check-in station's settings.
Check-In has two experiences: the new check-in experience and the classic check-in experience. Both run from the same app and the same address. Which one a station opens into is controlled by one setting on the station record: Use new check-in experience? in the web browser, labeled Use the new check-in experience on the kiosk itself.
Tip: Classic check-in is still supported, but it is being phased out. Check your labels before moving a station to classic. Older, printer-specific labels only print on the printer family they were designed for, so a station switched to classic may not be able to print all of its labels.
Where you can switch experiences
There are four places this setting can be changed:
In the web browser - go to Events > Check-In > Stations, edit the station, and toggle Use new check-in experience? The station picks up the change in the background and applies it the next time it is idle on its home screen.
On the station itself - go to Settings > Station and toggle Use the new check-in experience, then tap Save. The station immediately offers to reload; otherwise the change takes effect the next time it launches.
The launch chooser - the countdown screen a station shows at startup includes a button to switch to the other experience. See the next section for details.
At setup - the station setup form has a New Experience? toggle, which is on by default. Whatever it is set to applies from the station's very first boot.
The launch chooser
When a station starts up, whether by powering on, launching the app fresh, or after a Refresh Station, it briefly shows a countdown screen before either experience loads:
The screen tells you what is about to happen, for example The new check-in starts in a moment or Classic check-in starts in a moment, over a draining progress bar.
Tapping Continue now skips the wait and goes straight to the station's default experience.
Tapping the other button switches to the alternate experience. This is not a one-time override. The choice is saved back to the station, so it sticks until someone changes it again.
Left alone, the countdown continues into the default experience after 10 seconds.
When the chooser does not appear
The chooser only shows when the station is already known. Two cases skip it:
A device that has never been set up, or one the server actively rejects because the station was deleted or is no longer authorized, goes straight to the new experience's setup wizard. There is no choice to offer, because there is no station to choose for.
A station that is offline shows the chooser only if it has booted successfully before. In that case the switch button is a one-boot override rather than a saved change, because the station cannot write the setting back while it is offline.
Why a web-side change does not apply right away
When you change Use new check-in experience? from the web browser, the station applies it only once it is idle on its home screen. It will never interrupt a family in the middle of checking in. If a station is offline, it holds onto the change until it reconnects and can confirm it.
Turning the setting off in the browser while a kiosk is live works the same way: the station notices, and reloads itself into classic check-in the next time it is sitting idle on its home screen.
Switching back to classic on the kiosk
Turning the toggle off on the station itself asks you to confirm first, with Switch back to Classic? This station will use the classic check-in app after its next launch. After saving, the station offers Reload Now or Later. Choosing Later leaves the station on the new experience until it next restarts.
Tip: If a station keeps launching into classic even though the new experience is switched on, confirm the change actually saved on the right station record in the browser, because station names are easy to mix up. Then restart the station, because the setting is read at launch. The quickest reliable fix on site is to restart and use the launch chooser's switch button, which saves the choice back to the station.
Moving away from classic check-in
Classic check-in still works, but it is on its way out in favor of the new experience. Before you switch a station from classic to the new experience, or the reverse, check your check-in labels first: older, printer-specific labels only print on the printer family they were originally designed for, while labels built in the label designer print on any supported printer. A station that is switched over before its labels are ready may not be able to print everything it needs to.
Classic stations also do not receive over-the-air app updates until they are restarted, so a station left on classic for a while may be running an older build than the rest of your check-in stations.
Whichever experience a station runs, setup always happens through the new experience's wizard, so even a station that will run classic is set up there first.
