How does Apple Pay work for giving?

Describes where Apple Pay appears on giving pages and how to register your church website's domain so it works on embedded giving forms.

You will need the Contributions Settings permission to register a domain for Apple Pay.

Apple Pay lets your givers pay with the card already saved in their Apple Wallet, instead of typing card details. It is available on your One Church Software giving pages and, once you register your website's domain, on giving portals and embedded giving forms hosted on your own site.

Tip: Apple Pay on your website requires One Church Giving, and it becomes available once a merchant account is onboarded.

Where Apple Pay appears

Apple Pay is already registered for the onechurchsoftware.com domain. That means it works automatically on the giving pages served from your One Church address, such as https://yourchurch.onechurchsoftware.com/give and https://yourchurch.onechurchsoftware.com/public/give — there is nothing to set up.

If your giving portal or giving form is embedded on your own church website, that website is a different domain, so you need to register it before Apple Pay will appear there.

Tip: The Apple Pay button only shows for people whose device and browser support Apple Pay and who have a card saved in Apple Wallet — for example an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Someone on a Windows PC will not see the button, even though your setup is correct. If a giver reports that Apple Pay is missing, ask what device they are using before troubleshooting anything else.

Registering your website's domain

Go to Contributions > Settings > Apple Pay. You only need to register a domain once, and it covers all of your merchant accounts.

  1. Select Download the verification file at the top of the page.

  2. Upload the file to your website so that it opens at https://your-domain/.well-known/apple-developer-merchantid-domain-association, with no file extension and no redirect. Your website host or web developer usually does this step.

  3. Open the file address in a browser to confirm it loads before you continue.

  4. Select Add Domain.

  5. Enter your site's address in Website Domain — the domain your pages are served from, for example http://www.yourchurchname.org.

  6. Select Register. One Church Software checks for the verification file before registering the domain.

  7. If you use the giving web embed on your site, change the embed to use version 3.2 of the script file.

Checking a domain's status

Registered domains are listed on the Apple Pay tab with these columns:

  • Domain — the website address you registered.

  • Status — Registered, Not Registered, or Registered on [number] of [number] Merchant Accounts if registration succeeded for some merchant accounts but not all.

  • Added On — when the domain was added.

If a domain saves but registration fails for one or more merchant accounts, fix the problem — most often the verification file is missing, renamed, or redirecting — and then use Retry Registration.

When Apple Pay does not appear

Work through these in order:

  • The giver is not on an Apple device. Ask them to try the same page on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac with a card in Apple Wallet.

  • The page is on your own website and the domain is not registered. Follow the steps above.

  • The wrong form of the domain is registered. Check whether your pages are served from www. or not, and register the one in use.

  • The verification file is not reachable. Open https://your-domain/.well-known/apple-developer-merchantid-domain-association in a browser. It must load directly, with no file extension and no redirect.

  • The web embed is on an older script version. Update the embed to version 3.2.

  • Submitter fields are disabled on the form. Apple Pay is disabled on a form while submitter fields are off, because Apple Pay does not share the payer's name and the payment would use the submitter's name instead.

  • No merchant account is onboarded yet. Apple Pay becomes available once a merchant account is onboarded.
